San Trovaso, Renaissance church in Dorsoduro district, Venice, Italy.
San Trovaso is a Renaissance church in the Dorsoduro district of Venice with a distinctive two-entrance layout, one facing the canal and another toward the square. The brick structure contains religious artworks and follows the design principles of its period.
The site began as an oratory in 1028, but the current structure was rebuilt in 1584 by architect Francesco Smeraldi after the nave collapsed. This reconstruction gave the building its present Renaissance form.
The interior holds paintings by Tintoretto, including 'The Temptation of Saint Anthony' and 'The Last Supper' in the Milledonne Chapel. These works shape how visitors experience the sacred space and reflect the devotion of those who came here over centuries.
The church operates on weekdays and remains closed on Sundays, so plan visits for Monday through Saturday. Morning and early afternoon hours offer the best light for viewing the artworks inside.
Next to the church stands one of Venice's few remaining gondola boatyards, where craftspeople continue to maintain and repair these traditional boats. This workshop offers a rare glimpse into the craft that has shaped the city's identity for centuries.
