Lago di Caldonazzo, Alpine lake in Valsugana valley, Italy
Lago di Caldonazzo is the largest lake in Trentino, situated between the settlements of Caldonazzo and Calceranica in the Valsugana valley. Spanning about 5.4 square kilometers with depths reaching 49 meters, the water sits nestled below mountain slopes on both sides.
The lake feeds the Brenta River, which served as a key trade route connecting the Valsugana region to Venice during medieval times. This waterway helped link the valley to broader commercial networks for centuries.
The Palio dei Draghi dragon boat race each August draws teams from the surrounding communities for traditional competitions on the water. This event reflects how central the lake remains to local identity and gatherings.
Water temperatures range from 20 to 24 degrees Celsius (68 to 75 Fahrenheit) from May through September, making it suitable for swimming, sailing, and water skiing. Multiple access points line the shores, making it easy to enter the water or rent equipment for activities.
This is the only location in Trentino where water skiing receives official authorization year-round. This distinction makes it a preferred destination for water skiers seeking to train beyond the typical summer season.
