Castello Orsini-Odescalchi, Military castle museum in Bracciano, Italy
The stone fortress rises above Lake Bracciano with pentagonal walls, three circular corner towers, and two rectangular towers measuring 40 meters in height.
Construction of the castle began in 1470 under Napoleon Orsini, with architects Francesco di Giorgio Martini and Giovannino de' Dolci completing the structure by 1485.
The castle interior contains Renaissance frescoes, period furniture, ancient weapons, and a notable fifteenth-century frieze depicting the labors of Hercules.
The castle museum opens daily except Mondays from 10:00 to 17:00, with guided tours available in multiple languages through advance reservation.
Pope Sixtus IV declared this castle superior to the papal residence when he sought refuge here during the 1476 plague outbreak in Rome.
