Bracciano, Medieval castle town near Lake Bracciano, Italy

Bracciano is a hilltop settlement above the lake of the same name near Rome, featuring a historic castle at its center and tightly packed streets. The Orsini-Odescalchi castle with its decorated rooms dominates the settlement and forms the focal point of the urban layout.

The settlement began in the 10th century as a defensive tower against raids and later became a fortified town under the Orsini family from 1234 onward. Noble families shaped the town's development across several centuries.

The town takes its name from the lake that has shaped life here for centuries, and the narrow streets reflect how medieval communities organized themselves. Local squares serve as gathering spaces where daily routines and historical memories blend together.

The location sits about 30 kilometers northwest of Rome and connects via regular train service, making the journey from the city straightforward. Visitors can explore the streets on foot or use the waterfront for outdoor activities.

The town houses an Italian Air Force Museum displaying a collection of historical aircraft from different eras, including military fighter planes. This gathering attracts visitors interested in aviation history and adds an unexpected dimension to the visit.
