Riserva parziale naturale Monterano

Monterano Regional Nature Reserve is a protected area between two mountain chains that contains wooded hillsides, deep volcanic ravines, open grasslands, and pastures. The Mignone River winds through the territory, connecting different ecosystems within the reserve.

The reserve was established in 1988 to protect natural landscapes located between two mountain ranges that retain characteristics from ancient Roman times. This step helped preserve the region's long-standing geography and forms.

Local herders on horseback manage livestock across the grasslands using traditional methods that blend with the landscape. This way of working has shaped how people move through and use this territory today.

Hiking trails run through the reserve and allow you to move through different terrain and see the landscape from different angles. Wearing sturdy footwear is advisable because the ground shifts from soft grassland to steeper ravine areas.

In certain spots, gases rise from underground pools and create conditions where a rare grass species thrives on the ground. This geological feature reveals that the territory remains volcanically active and continues to change.
