Riserva parziale naturale Monterano

The reserve extends across 1000 hectares of land, featuring hilly woods, volcanic ravines, meadows, and pastures crossed by the Mignone River.

Established in 1988, the Monterano Reserve protects a natural area between Tolfa Mountains and Sabatini Mountains, representing intact landscapes of Roman Tuscia.

Traditional Maremma cowboys maintain their customs by using local breed horses to manage cattle herds throughout the protected grasslands.

Visitors can explore multiple ecosystems through hiking trails, observe wildlife, and examine geological formations within the designated preservation zones.

Underground pools release gases where specific grass species called Agrostis Albula grows, indicating the territory's active volcanic nature.
