Chiesa di Sant'Egidio

The chiesa di Sant'Egidio is a three-nave church in Tolfa distinguished by a prominent bell tower on its facade. Inside, the central nave is flanked by two side aisles, with the main entrance positioned centrally and additional doorways on the sides.

The church was granted collegiate status in 1588 by Pope Sixtus V, reflecting growing regional importance. A major expansion occurred in 1630 when the rising population of Tolfa necessitated larger spaces within the building.

The church has served as the spiritual center of Tolfa for centuries and shapes how residents experience their town square. Visitors sense a connection to generations of worshippers who have gathered here, creating a living link between past and present.

The church sits on Via XX Settembre in central Tolfa and is easily accessible on foot as you explore the town. Services occur regularly in the morning, especially on holidays, so visiting during quieter times allows for a more peaceful experience.

Beneath the main altar rests an urn holding the remains of Saint Christina, transferred from Rome's Via Ostiense catacombs to Tolfa in 1733. This relic links the small town directly to Rome's earliest Christian history.
