Cencelle

Cencelle is an archaeological site near Tarquinia containing the remains of a medieval settlement with residential structures, fortification walls, and multiple occupation layers. The excavations reveal how buildings were organized and positioned across the site, allowing visitors to understand the spatial layout of this historical community.

The settlement was founded in the 9th century to protect inhabitants from pirate raids and establish new trade opportunities in the region. It developed into a significant religious center and served as a bishop's seat for several centuries before its decline.

The archaeological site contains numerous artifacts, including pottery and tools, which demonstrate the daily activities of medieval inhabitants.

The site requires sturdy footwear due to uneven ground and exposed structures scattered across the area. Visit during warmer months when excavation work is most active and visitors can observe researchers at work or access guided tours.
