Women's Museum Meran

The Women's Museum Meran occupies a former convent of Poor Clares in the historic city center and displays collections of clothing and accessories. The exhibition documents changes in female fashion and ways of life from the early 1800s to recent times.

The museum was founded in 1988 by Austrian-born Evelyn Ortner, starting as a fashion collection. It developed into a center for documenting and understanding women's life experiences across different time periods.

The permanent exhibition shows clothing and accessories that reflect how women's roles in society and family changed over time. Visitors can see how fashion and daily life for women evolved across generations.

The museum is centrally located and easily reached on foot, though the rooms are connected by narrow stairs and old corridors. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and allow flexible time to explore the displays without rushing.

The museum serves as the registration office for the International Association of Women's Museums, connecting more than thirty similar institutions worldwide. This role makes it a key hub in the global network of museums focused on women's history.
