Merano

Merano is a town in South Tyrol sitting in a valley basin and ringed by mountains. Along the Passer river, promenades and parkland run through the center where arcades and villas line the streets.

The settlement was once a Roman road station in 15 BC, later in the 13th century the capital of the County of Tyrol. Over centuries the town grew into a spa resort with thermal baths and promenades.

The spa gardens sit among buildings from the Austrian imperial period and Art Nouveau villas that still shape the town today. At the weekly markets, vendors sell South Tyrolean apples and speck while German and Italian echo through the lanes.

A guest card simplifies access to public transport and nearby sites around the town. An app helps locate paths and places within the area.

The Trauttmansdorff Gardens display over 80 garden landscapes across 12 hectares (30 acres), including around 200,000 tulips in spring. Inside the former imperial residence stands a tourism museum.
