Brunnenburg, Medieval castle in Tirolo, Italy
Brunnenburg is a castle built in the 13th century on a rocky outcrop in Tirol, displaying thick stone walls that reveal different construction periods. Inside, an agricultural museum preserves traditional farming tools and keeps rare animal breeds including Mangalitza pigs.
The fortress was founded in the 13th century by the Tarant family and passed through multiple owners over the centuries. After falling into disrepair during the 1800s, it was later restored and now operates as a museum.
The castle reflects agricultural traditions that have shaped life in this region for centuries, with the farm museum demonstrating how locals have worked with animals and crops over generations. Visitors can see equipment and practices that still connect people to their countryside heritage today.
The castle sits on a hilltop and is best reached on foot, particularly from the nearby village below. Sturdy shoes are recommended because the path includes uneven terrain and stone steps throughout the approach.
During the 1950s, American poet Ezra Pound lived here and worked on his major literary composition, which many regard as one of the most important poems of the 20th century. This connection to literary history draws visitors interested in modern poetry to the castle.
