Castle Thurnstein

Castle Thurnstein is a medieval fortress positioned on a hillside near Merano with thick stone walls and defensive towers. The property now operates a restaurant and hotel rooms in a converted farm building that once served the castle grounds.

The building first appears in written records from 1276 under the name Thurm Platzleid. The current name Thurnstein became official in 1478 and has remained in use since that time.

The castle displays South Tyrolean architectural features visible in its walls and towers that developed over time. Visitors can observe how different building styles layered together through the ages.

The location sits on elevated ground and access is limited to hotel guests only. Visitors need to arrange accommodation in advance as entry is restricted to registered overnight visitors.

The restaurant menu features Napoleon Wine, a connection to a historical moment when news related to the French emperor reached the estate. This distinctive element ties the dining experience to a specific event from the property's past.
