Vorst Castle, Medieval castle in Algund, Italy
Vorst Castle rises on a rocky hilltop and consists of two residential towers with crenellated tops and a connecting wing that encloses an inner courtyard. The property remains privately owned by the Fuchs family, who operate the Forst brewery.
First mentioned in 1302, this stronghold changed hands among noble families including the Counts von Vorst, Starkenberg, and Brandis. During the 1500s the structure underwent significant rebuilding that shaped its current appearance.
The name comes from the von Vorst family who built and shaped it during medieval times. Today the structure stands as a quiet reminder of that noble past and shows how such fortified residences organized their inhabitants' daily lives.
The castle is private property with exterior viewing possible, though interior spaces remain closed to visitors. Its position along Strada del Passo dello Stelvio offers good sightlines from the valley below.
Inside, two stone crosses mark the ceiling and connect to local legends about a tragic conflict between brothers. These crosses form part of the castle's mysterious and legendary heritage.
