Maria Steinach, Dominican monastery in Algund, Italy
Maria Steinach monastery stands at the foot of mountains in Algund, featuring a Romanesque portal entrance and Gothic architectural elements throughout its structure.
The monastery was established in 1243 by Adelheid, daughter of Albert III of Tyrol, and operated continuously until its temporary closure during the Josephine reforms of 1782.
The monastery contains 15th-century frescoes and serves as a testament to the Dominican religious traditions that have shaped the South Tyrolean religious landscape.
The monastery maintains regular visiting hours for individuals and groups, with guided tours available through the local tourism office in Algund.
Following its restoration in 1848, Maria Steinach formed a union with the Dominican convent in Lienz in 2018, continuing its religious function in modern times.
