Kraftwerk auf der Töll, Hydroelectric power plant in Algund, South Tyrol
Kraftwerk auf der Töll is a hydroelectric facility in Algund that channels water from the Etsch River through a tunnel in Marlinger Mountain. The plant uses four Francis turbines to generate electricity for nearby communities.
The facility was built between 1896 and 1898 under engineer Oskar von Miller as the first major hydroelectric plant in South Tyrol. It marked the beginning of modern electricity supply in the region.
The power station shows how the region once used water power and moved away from traditional mills toward modern electricity generation. Visitors can see today how important water was for the economic development of this area.
The site can be viewed from outside and offers insights into the technical structure of an early hydroelectric facility. Access is straightforward and the plant is located near Algund's village center.
The plant received a complete modernization between 1995 and 1997 with new turbines and automated control systems. This renewal allowed the facility to continue generating electricity efficiently despite being over a century old.
