The Hochmuterbahn is an aerial lift in Tirolo that runs from the village up to the Hochmuth mountain. The ride lasts about five minutes, with a valley station set around 650 m and a mountain station at roughly 1400 m, giving riders a wide view over the town and the Etsch Valley.
The area around Tirolo has been used for mountain farming since the Middle Ages, with some farmsteads still standing from that time. The lift was later added as a public transport link to connect the village with the pastures and paths above, making the upper slopes easier to reach.
Around the mountain station, family-run farms and mountain inns still make local ham, cheese, and sausages in small batches. Passing walkers often stop at these places for a warm meal, and the simple timber buildings make the farming tradition feel part of everyday life.
Walking paths start right at the upper station, so comfortable shoes help if you plan to explore the mountain. The lift runs on a regular daytime schedule, and getting there by car or public bus is straightforward, with parking available near the valley station.
Many visitors do not notice that the upper area is also used for hang-gliding, with the open terrain above Merano giving good conditions for launching. The same grassy slopes that hikers cross in summer become quiet takeoff points where gliders lift into the valley air.
