Landesfürstliche Burg, Gothic castle museum in Merano, Italy
Landesfürstliche Burg is a medieval castle in Merano with rooms from the Gothic and Renaissance periods spread across three floors. The museum displays furniture, weapons, musical instruments, and other objects from past times.
The castle was built in 1470 for Sigismund of Austria, who lived here as prince of Tyrol. Later it served as an administrative center for the Counts of Tyrol.
The rooms show how nobility lived during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, with furniture, ceramic stoves, and everyday tools on display. You can also see a small chapel with painted walls from the 16th century.
The building stands near the town hall in the old town and is easy to reach on foot. You can explore the rooms on your own or use the stairs between floors to see all exhibition areas.
In 1875, citizens of Merano and newspapers worldwide pushed back against plans to tear down the castle and build a school in its place. This strong opposition saved the building from demolition.
