Immacolata Concezione al Capo, Baroque church in Capo Market district, Palermo, Italy.
Immacolata Concezione al Capo is a Baroque church in Palermo's Capo Market district, with a front facade decorated with colored marble inlays and ornamental glass. Inside, a high vault covers the nave, and painted surfaces line the walls from floor to ceiling.
Construction began in 1604 under architect Antonio Muttone and was not completed until 1740. The long building process meant the church absorbed different phases of Baroque style as it grew over the decades.
The name refers to the Immaculate Conception, a theme visible in the paintings and sculptures inside. Locals from the surrounding market often step in briefly to pray before continuing with their day.
The church sits right at the edge of the Capo Market, near Porta Carini, and is easy to spot among the market stalls. Visiting in the morning gives you a chance to see both the open church and the market at its busiest.
The church entrance sits so close to the market stalls that fish and vegetable vendors sometimes set up their goods just steps away from the door. It is one of the few places where you can step from a working market directly into a church in a single stride.
