Islas del Gran Estanque de Marsala is an island group in the Marsala lagoon of Sicily, comprising four distinct islands surrounded by shallow waters. The lagoon itself covers an expansive area with waters that shift in depth across different zones, ranging from very shallow to moderate depths.
The lagoon took shape following Phoenician settlement on Mozia, with sand shifts gradually reshaping the waters and islands over time. Later port development in the region further influenced the current configuration of the shallow basin.
The islands contain preserved windmills and ancient salt extraction systems that demonstrate traditional Mediterranean salt production methods through water pumping.
This location works well for water activities thanks to steady winds and shallow waters that allow easy navigation. Access is available from the nearby towns of Marsala or Trapani on the mainland.
