Lucedio Abbey, Romanesque abbey in Trino, Italy.
Lucedio Abbey is a Romanesque structure with stone walls, towers, and characteristic arched details set near Trino. The complex includes a church with large bell towers and multiple rooms such as a Cloister and Refectory that show the original monastic layout.
The monastery was established in 1101 and grew into a major religious center during the medieval period. From the 15th century onward, monks began cultivating rice fields, transforming the region and establishing it as a rice-growing hub that reshaped agriculture in Vercelli province.
The name recalls a medieval monk and remains woven into local traditions today. The layout of rooms like the Chapter House and Cloister still reflects how monks organized their daily work and prayer.
The site is easily reached from the nearby town of Trino, and flat shoes are recommended due to numerous steps throughout the buildings. Outdoor areas are readily accessible, though exploring some interior rooms requires patience and physical effort.
The abbey functions not just as a historical site but as part of an active rice farming operation that works directly on the grounds. Visitors can explore a shop selling local rice varieties and traditional agricultural products grown there today.
