The forest is surrounded by rice fields that create a clear boundary between the natural reserve and the cultivated landscape beyond.
In 1275, the Marquis of Monferrato granted forest rights to Trino inhabitants, establishing a communal management system that has protected the woodland for centuries. This early form of shared stewardship created a model that preserved the original forest landscape to the present day.
The forest retains traces of ancient Roman reverence, as it formed part of Lucus Dei, a vast woodland dedicated to Apollo in antiquity.
Multiple entrance points provide access to the park, with the main route starting from Cascina Guglielmina and offering trails of varying lengths. Sturdy footwear is recommended, and visitors should plan enough time to walk at a comfortable pace through the wooded areas.
The forest supports an unexpectedly diverse bird population with over 150 species that find food and nesting sites here. This ecological richness stems from the isolation of the woodland and the protection that comes from its continuity across many centuries.
