Pantelleria Island, Mediterranean island and volcanic formation between Sicily and Tunisia, Italy
Pantelleria Island is an 83-square-kilometer volcanic formation between Sicily and Tunisia featuring multiple craters, hot springs, and steam vents. Its highest peak, Montagna Grande, rises 836 meters above the sea.
The island became an important trading post for the Phoenicians starting in the 7th century BC and fell under Roman control in 217 BC. This succession of occupations left lasting marks on the place and its people.
The local language carries Arabic roots from centuries of settlement by different peoples. You hear these influences today in how locals speak and in the traditions they maintain.
You can reach the island by plane through Pantelleria Airport with connections to Trapani and Palermo, or by ferry from Sicily. The terrain is volcanic and rocky, so sturdy footwear is helpful for exploring.
