Tiglieto Abbey

Tiglieto Abbey is a Cistercian monastery located in a valley in northern Italy, positioned at about 380 meters elevation with a Romanesque brick basilica that incorporates Gothic design elements. The complex includes a sacristy, dining hall, and former sleeping quarters, with some sections now serving different functions.

Founded in 1120, the abbey marked the Cistercians' first expansion beyond France and became their inaugural establishment in Italy. The monastery experienced long periods of decline before monastic life returned to the site in recent decades.

The monastery shaped the valley as a center of spiritual practice and daily work, where monks balanced prayer with manual labor for centuries. This rhythm remains visible in how the buildings and spaces are arranged around the grounds.
