Sprechenstein Castle, Medieval castle in Freienfeld, Italy
Sprechenstein Castle is a medieval fortress in Freienfeld comprising a lower fortress section and an upper keep with residential structures. The complex sits at a higher elevation compared to the neighboring Reifenstein Castle nearby.
The castle underwent major reconstruction in 1241 and remained under Trautson family control until 1775. Ownership then passed to the Auersperg family in the following period.
The restaurant operates on farm-to-table principles, sourcing ingredients from nearby agricultural producers. This approach keeps visitors connected to the surrounding farming heritage of the valley.
You can view the castle's exterior from Castel Pietra 1A in Campo di Trens. Contact the email address gv.weitwoerth@gmx.at for specific questions or information about access.
The castle sustained significant damage during World War II, necessitating extensive restoration efforts. The recovery work was carried out in partnership with heritage authorities in Trento.
