Santa Maria del Regno, Romanesque church in Ardara, Italy
The Santa Maria del Regno church stands on a volcanic plateau, constructed entirely from dark basalt stone with a facade divided into five sections.
The church was constructed in 1107 as a palace chapel by Giorgia, daughter of the Giudice of Torres, during the period of Pisan influence.
The interior houses Sardinia's largest 16th-century polyptych, displaying prophets, saints, and scenes from Virgin Mary's life behind the main altar.
Visitors can find the church at Piazza Nostra Signora del Regno in Ardara, accessible via the SS 131 highway exit.
The church columns feature 17th-century paintings of Apostles, while the wooden statue of Madonna with Child wears royal symbols.
