Santa Maria del Regno

Santa Maria del Regno is a Romanesque church standing on a volcanic plateau in Ardara, constructed entirely from dark basalt stone with a facade divided into five sections. The building displays the sturdy stone construction and structured exterior divisions typical of this architectural style.

The church was founded in 1107 as a palace chapel by Giorgia, daughter of the Giudice of Torres, during the period of Pisan influence in the region. This establishment reflects the early medieval history and political dynamics of Sardinia.

The interior displays a large 16th-century polyptych showing prophets, saints, and scenes from Mary's life behind the main altar. These religious artworks reflect the artistic importance this church held in the region.

The church is located at Piazza Nostra Signora del Regno in Ardara and is accessible via the SS 131 highway exit. Its position in the town center makes it straightforward to reach when exploring the area.

The interior columns feature 17th-century paintings depicting the Apostles, while a wooden statue of Madonna with Child displays royal symbols. These details reveal the connection between religious devotion and ruling authority expressed in this chapel.
