Funicolare del Guncina, Funicular railway in Gries district, Bolzano, Italy
Funicolare del Guncina was a cable railway in the Gries district of Bolzano that connected the valley to the Hotel Reichrieglerhof on Guntschnaberg mountain. It climbed 185 meters in elevation over a track length of 350 meters.
This cable railway was built in 1911-1912 by the Milan-based company Ceretti & Tanfani and equipped with electrical systems from Siemens-Schuckert. It operated continuously for 51 years before being closed on March 31, 1963.
This cable railway was part of a network of mountain railways that opened the hills around Bolzano for tourism. Together with other similar lines, it allowed visitors to explore the surrounding landscape more easily.
The valley station sat at 300 meters in elevation and connected with the Gries tram line, while the mountain station reached 485 meters. Each cabin held about 20 passengers per journey.
The track included two viaducts and curved in a circular arc, featuring a maximum slope of 673 per thousand over its length. This steep incline made it one of the most technically demanding cable railways of its era.
