The Territorial Abbey of Subiaco consists of a monastery complex with three cloisters displaying Cosmatesque, Gothic, and Renaissance architectural elements.
Saint Benedict established this monastic site in the 6th century, creating one of the first Christian monasteries that influenced religious practices across Europe.
The monastery preserves a collection of medieval frescoes, including the earliest known portrait of Saint Francis of Assisi without stigmata marks.
Visitors can reach the abbey through regular train connections from Rome to Subiaco, with guided tours available in multiple languages throughout the day.
The Sacred Grotto within the abbey contains the cave where Saint Benedict lived as a hermit for three years before founding the monastery.
