Territorial Abbey of Subiaco

The Territorial Abbey of Subiaco is a monastery complex featuring three cloisters that blend Cosmatesque, Gothic, and Renaissance architectural styles. The buildings display different construction periods, with architectural elements layered across several centuries.

Saint Benedict founded this monastic community in the 6th century, establishing one of the earliest Christian monasteries that shaped religious life across Europe. This foundation laid the groundwork for the Benedictine monastic movement.

The monastery houses medieval frescoes, including the earliest known portrait of Saint Francis of Assisi depicted without stigmata. These artworks show how monks expressed their religious devotion through painting and visual storytelling.

The monastery is reachable by regular train connections from Rome to Subiaco, with guided tours offered in multiple languages. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, as the complex consists of several buildings and exploring different areas requires walking between them.

The Sacred Grotto within the abbey contains the cave where Saint Benedict lived as a hermit for three years before founding the monastery. This site provides a direct glimpse into the earliest beginnings of the Benedictine community.
