Via Krupp, Serpentine footpath in Capri, Italy
The Via Krupp path follows a series of tight switchbacks down a limestone cliff, connecting the Gardens of Augustus to Marina Piccola beach.
German industrialist Friedrich Alfred Krupp commissioned engineer Emilio Mayer to construct this path between 1900 and 1902 for personal transportation purposes.
The stone-paved walkway represents early 20th-century engineering methods, demonstrating how wealthy Europeans modified Capri's natural landscape for their needs.
The path descends 100 meters through multiple hairpin turns, requiring visitors to wear appropriate walking shoes and carry water during summer months.
Each zigzag section of the path appears to stack directly above the next, creating an optical pattern when viewed from the Gardens of Augustus.
