Amphitheatre of Pompeii, Ancient amphitheatre in Pompeii, Italy
The Amphitheatre of Pompeii is the oldest surviving Roman amphitheatre.
Built around 70 BC, the current amphitheatre is the earliest Roman amphitheatre known to have been built of stone.
It was used for gladiator battles and other public spectacles.
It's located in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, and today it can be visited as part of the Pompeii Archaeological Park.
Unlike later Roman amphitheatres, the arena was not dug into the ground: it was built up from it.
