Republic of San Marco, Historical state in Venice, Italy
The Republic of San Marco was a short-lived state centered on Venice, encompassing the Venetian Lagoon and surrounding territories. It operated with its own currency, administrative offices in the Doge's Palace, and formal governmental institutions.
The state emerged in 1848 when lawyer Daniele Manin led a rebellion against Austrian rule and established a new government. It collapsed the following year after a siege brought famine and disease to the territory.
Venetian was spoken throughout the territory and the Catholic faith shaped daily life and public observances. These choices reflected what the population valued and how they understood their community.
Visitors can explore the sites connected to this period, particularly the Doge's Palace and central areas of Venice where government operations took place. Allow time to walk through different quarters to get a sense of how the city was organized.
The collapse came after a prolonged siege lasting around a year that exhausted the population and left deep marks on collective memory. This difficult period remains central to how Venice understands its own past.
