Rifugio Cauriol, Mountain refuge in Ziano di Fiemme, Italy
Rifugio Cauriol sits at 1,594 meters in the Sadole valley, surrounded by peaks of the Lagorai mountain chain in Trentino. The hut provides lodging and meals for hikers and mountaineers exploring the surrounding terrain.
The hut began as a mountain refuge in this high-altitude area and was later adapted to preserve wartime artifacts. Since 1967, it has documented and displayed World War I objects recovered from the surrounding region.
The refuge prepares traditional Trentino dishes including sauerkraut, polenta with melted cheese, stew, and local lucanica sausage following regional recipes. These meals represent the culinary traditions maintained in this mountain region for generations.
Access is on foot via a dirt path from Ziano di Fiemme, with the final stretch taking roughly twenty minutes. The terrain is mountainous and the trail can become slippery in rain or snow.
The hut displays a collection of war relics discovered by Aldo Zorzi in Val di Sadole, offering glimpses into the military past of the area. These finds tell stories of soldiers who operated in this rugged mountain setting during the conflict.
