San Genesio cableway, Aerial lift in Jenesien and Bolzano, Italy.
The San Genesio cableway is an aerial lift that runs from the city of Bolzano up to the mountain village of Jenesien, crossing a steep Alpine slope. The cabin departs from a lower station inside Bolzano and arrives at a station near the center of Jenesien.
The line opened in 1908 under the name Kohlerer-Bahn, making it one of the oldest passenger cable cars in Europe. The route has remained the same since then, though the cabins and technical systems have been updated over the decades.
For the people of Jenesien, the cableway is an everyday connection to the city below, not just a tourist ride. On board, you often hear both German and Italian spoken, reflecting the two languages that coexist in South Tyrol.
The lower station is in the center of Bolzano and easy to reach on foot from the main streets. Cabins have limited space, so going outside of peak hours makes the ride more comfortable.
Near the upper station in Jenesien, there is a plateau covered by one of the largest larch forests in Europe. On the same plateau, earth pyramids rise from the ground, geological formations shaped by erosion over a long time.
