San Genesio cableway, Aerial lift in Jenesien and Bolzano, Italy.
San Genesio cableway is an aerial lift that connects Bolzano city to the mountain village of Jenesien, crossing the Alpine terrain below. The system uses a rope-driven mechanism to transport passengers continuously across the slope.
The system was built in 1908 as the Kohlerer-Bahn and was one of Europe's first enclosed aerial cable cars for passenger transport. It played an important role in opening up the mountainous areas around Bolzano at that time.
The cableway opens access to the Salto area, where visitors encounter the rhythms of mountain life and the stories of South Tyrol's communities. Walking through these slopes, you see how the region's people have adapted to the Alpine environment over generations.
The cableway operates during daylight hours with regular departures; buy your ticket at the lower station in Bolzano. The best time to ride is early morning when crowds are lighter and visibility across the valley is clearest.
From the summit you reach Europe's largest larch tree plateau, where ancient trees stand beside unusual earth pyramids. These geological formations developed through erosion and create a landscape that is rarely seen elsewhere in the region.
