Basilica of Our Lady of Sorrows and St. Philip Benizi, Minor basilica and shrine in Vaglia, Italy

The Basilica of Our Lady of Sorrows and St. Philip Benizi sits on Monte Senario and displays baroque features including curved decorative elements, white stone walls, and twin bell towers. The building contains a central nave, side chapels, and an altar area, along with adjoining structures that once housed the religious community.

The site was founded in 1234 by members of the Servite Order who established their first monastery on this hilltop. Over time, the complex grew into an important pilgrimage destination and was continuously developed by the Servite community.

This shrine draws pilgrims who come to honor Our Lady of Sorrows through prayer and devotion, particularly during religious festivals. The basilica serves as a spiritual focal point where visitors can experience Catholic worship traditions in a setting tied to the Servite community.

The site is accessible by road, with parking available near the basilica entrance, or visitors can hike up the surrounding paths. Wear sturdy footwear if you plan to explore the grounds, as the terrain can be uneven in places.

The complex preserves the residential chambers of Saint Philip Benizi, the 13th-century leader who expanded the Servite Order significantly. These personal rooms offer a rare glimpse into how an early religious founder actually lived.
