Orto Botanico Comunale di Lucca
Orto Botanico Comunale di Lucca, Botanical garden within city walls of Lucca, Italy.
The Botanical Garden of Lucca is a triangular area within the city walls featuring trees, a pond, greenhouses, and research laboratories for plant study. The grounds display both plants from distant regions and species native to Tuscany, each arranged in separate sections.
Maria Luisa I, Duchess of Lucca, founded the garden in 1820 to advance scientific research in the region. This establishment reflected the enlightened ideals of the era and made it a center for botanical study.
The place functions as a repository of scientific work, where dried plant specimens and records of regional botanists from many centuries are kept in a museum. Visitors can observe how local research developed and which plants shaped the region.
The garden is open during weekends from November through March and is accessed via the entrance at Rampa del Baluardo San Regolo. Visitors should bring warm clothing and allow time to explore the different plant sections and the museum.
One special feature is the rhododendron collection, organized in its own area within the garden and creating striking visual effects. This specialized section draws visitors interested in these diverse shrub varieties.
