Orto Botanico Comunale di Lucca, Botanical garden within city walls of Lucca, Italy.
The Orto Botanico Comunale di Lucca is a botanical garden set inside the historic city walls of Lucca, laid out on an old bastion ground. It includes open areas with trees and a pond, greenhouses, and a natural history museum housing dried plant specimens.
The garden was founded in 1820 by Maria Luisa I, Duchess of Lucca, to support botanical research in the region. Over time it grew into a study center for Tuscan plants and regional natural history.
The garden takes its name from the old bastion of the city walls on which it was built. Visitors can see how living plants and scientific collections are displayed side by side in an urban setting.
The main entrance is at Rampa del Baluardo San Regolo, right along the city walls. The garden is open on weekends only from November through March, and on more days during the rest of the year.
The museum inside the garden holds a herbarium built up by local botanists over several centuries, starting in the 1600s. This collection shows how the plants of Tuscany were recorded long before the garden itself existed.
