Saint Jerome of the Croats, Church building and Italian national heritage in Campus Martius, Rome, Italy
The Saint Jerome of the Croats church stands on Via Tomacelli with a late Renaissance facade adorned with travertine stone and papal emblems.
Pope Nicholas V granted the site of Santa Marina de Posterula to refugees from Turkish-controlled regions in 1453 for building a new church.
The church contains frescoes by Giovanni Guerra from 1590 and additional artworks by Paolo Guidotti and Pietro Gagliardi inside its walls.
The church functions as part of the Pontifical Croatian College of Saint Jerome and requires prior arrangement with the College for visits.
The building served as a refuge for Croatian communities fleeing Ottoman control and maintains its role as Croatia's national church in Rome.
