Fontana del Porto di Ripetta is a Baroque fountain featuring an oval basin topped with a cylindrical section. Two intertwined dolphins and a large seashell form the decorative centerpiece of this water structure.
Pope Clement XI commissioned this fountain in 1704 as part of the Ripetta port complex. Travertine stone from the damaged Colosseum was repurposed to construct this structure.
The fountain represents the maritime heritage of Rome, marking the location of a former river port that connected the city with trade routes to Umbria.
This fountain is located at Piazza del Porto di Ripetta near Via di Ripetta and Lungotevere Marzio in central Rome. It is easy to reach on foot and sits in a visible spot along the riverbank area.
Two columns on this fountain originally functioned as hydrometers to measure water levels during Tiber River floods. This practical feature reveals how engineering and beauty were combined in one structure.
