Ales Cathedral

Ales Cathedral is a baroque church featuring a rectangular floor plan with substantial stone walls and barrel vaults that run throughout the nave and apse. The vaulting system creates an unbroken interior space with a sense of continuity from entrance to altar.

Construction started in 1634 as an ambitious project spanning multiple decades. Major redesign work took place from 1687 onward, reshaping the building until its completion in 1708.

The cathedral is named after two apostles and serves as the main church for the Diocese of Ales-Terralba. Religious artworks and objects inside reflect its spiritual importance to the local community.

The cathedral sits in the heart of Ales and is easily reached on foot from the town center. Visitors should be aware that regular services take place, and opening times may vary depending on religious events.

One of the two planned towers collapsed in 1683, causing significant damage and forcing changes to the original design. This incident left its mark on how the later construction phases unfolded.
