Sovana Cathedral

Sovana Cathedral is a Romanesque house of worship with a central nave supported by cross vaults and flanked by two side aisles. Stone columns throughout the interior feature intricate carved decorations that mark the architectural character of the space.

The current building rose beginning in 1248 on the foundation of an earlier church dating to the 8th century. Elements from the previous structure were incorporated into the new design and remain part of the cathedral today.

The cathedral displays capitals with plant motifs and animal heads that blend Christian imagery with local traditions. These decorative elements appear throughout the interior and shape how the space feels to visitors.

The church is accessible through a main entrance on Piazza del Duomo with parking available nearby. The surrounding plaza is lined with local shops and cafes, making a visit easily combined with other activities in the area.

During the summer solstice, sunlight enters through an apse window and travels across the entire nave in a natural light display. This solar phenomenon occurs only during that season and is often overlooked by visitors.
