Walls of Grosseto, Renaissance star fort in Grosseto, Italy.
The walls of Grosseto form a hexagonal defensive system with six pentagonal bastions surrounding the historic center. The complete perimeter spans several kilometers and encloses the old city with multiple access gates.
Construction of the fortification began in 1565 under Cosimo I de Medici following the conquest of Siena. Architects Baldassarre Lanci and Alessandro Pieroni completed this Renaissance defensive system by 1593.
The walls were transformed from military fortifications into public green spaces during the 19th century and now serve as a gathering area where residents and visitors walk and enjoy views of the city. This shift made the structure a daily part of local life rather than just a defensive barrier.
You can walk the complete circuit on a path that connects all the bastions and provides various access points for exploration. Wear sturdy shoes and bring sun protection or rain gear depending on the season.
The medieval Porta Vecchia gate is integrated into the Renaissance fortifications and shows the architectural shift from Sienese to Medici rule. This layering of different periods is clearly visible in the walls themselves.
