Grosseto, Provincial capital in Tuscany, Italy

Grosseto is a city in southern Tuscany, a few kilometers from the coast in the Maremma plain. The old town sits within hexagonal walls and is crossed by wide avenues leading to open squares and pedestrian zones.

In the Middle Ages, the settlement grew after the bishop's seat moved from ancient Roselle in 1138. Medici rule in the 16th century led to the construction of fortifications and the reshaping of the urban layout.

The 13th-century cathedral shapes the central square and shows the shift from Romanesque to Gothic building styles. Inside, the church preserves artworks from several periods that visitors can discover during a walk through.

The center is easy to explore on foot, as most sites are close together and streets are mostly flat. Bicycles work well for trips along the city walls or into surrounding park areas.

An open moat surrounds the fortification walls and is now covered with grass, so locals walk or jog there. This green belt creates a clear boundary between the historic center and newer neighborhoods around it.
