The first documented mention of San Pietro dates to 1188, though archaeological excavations revealed structural elements from the 9th century.
Four bas-relief panels from Byzantine and early medieval periods decorate the facade, displaying figures, animals, and decorative patterns.
The church stands along Corso Carducci, the main street of the historic center, near the intersection leading to Bigi and San Francesco churches.
Since 2010, the Romanian Orthodox Church has conducted services in this building, adding to its religious significance.
