Museo archeologico e d'arte della Maremma

Museo archeologico e d'arte della Maremma, Archaeological and art museum in Grosseto, Italy

The Museo archeologico e d'arte della Maremma is housed in the former Palazzo del Tribunale and displays archaeological discoveries and artworks from prehistoric times to the modern era across three floors in forty rooms. The collections document the material culture and artistic development of this Tuscan region over a long period.

Giovanni Chelli established the institution in 1860 as part of the Chelliana Library, and it became the Museo civico archeologico di Grosseto in 1955. This name change reflects its evolution from a private collection to a major public cultural facility for the city.

The collection features Etruscan urns from Volterra, Roman statues from the 2nd century, and medieval artworks by Sienese painters who worked in the Maremma region. These objects tell the story of the different peoples and traditions that shaped this part of Tuscany over many centuries.

The building can be visited independently or with a guide, as professional archaeologists and art historians offer tours in Italian and English, and schools can participate in interactive workshops. Plan enough time to walk through all three floors at your own pace to fully explore the different collections.

The museum displays a reconstructed shipwreck from Giglio Porto dating to the 3rd century AD, complete with its original cargo of oil amphorae. This underwater relic offers a rare glimpse into trade routes and daily life in Roman times.
