San Pietro in Valle, Medieval abbey in Ferentillo, Italy.

San Pietro in Valle is a monastic complex set on the forested slope of Mount Solenne along the road from Ferentillo to Cascia. The site comprises a church and surrounding abbey buildings integrated into the steep landscape of the Valnerina valley.

Duke Faroaldo II of Spoleto founded the monastery in the 8th century, later renouncing his title to live as a monk there until his death in 728. This act established the site as a significant center for monastic growth in the region.

The church interior displays 12th-century frescoes showing biblical stories from both Testaments. These paintings reveal how medieval artists in this region told religious narratives on stone walls.

The complex has been converted into a guest facility following recent restoration work and welcomes visitors. Wear sturdy shoes since access involves hiking on steep forest trails.

The church contains five Roman sarcophagi decorated with pagan motifs, including one in Asiatic style that traditionally held Duke Faroaldo II's remains. These ancient stone containers predate the monastery's founding and reveal the layered religious history of this place.
