Museo delle mummie

Located in the crypt of Santo Stefano Church, the museum exhibits 24 human mummies, 10 preserved heads, and over 270 skulls discovered during excavations.

The mummies were discovered in 1871 when the local cemetery was relocated following the Saint Cloud edict, which required burial grounds to move away from churches.

The collection includes preserved bodies of local residents from different social classes, providing insights into the funeral practices of past centuries in Umbria.

The museum restricts access during winter months from November through March, opening exclusively on weekends with specific visiting schedules.

The natural mummification process occurred due to specific environmental and chemical conditions in the crypt soil, as documented by the Accademia dei Lincei in 1887.
