Abbazia di Santa Maria di Sitria, Romanesque abbey in Scheggia e Pascelupo, Italy

Abbazia di Santa Maria di Sitria is a Benedictine abbey in the Monte Cucco natural park near Isola Fossara, in the municipality of Scheggia e Pascelupo. Its church has a single nave separated from the presbytery by a stone stair of eight steps, with a pointed stone vault and an altar framed by trilobate arches on thirteen small columns. A seventeenth-century fresco of the Crucifixion fills the apse basin, and a crypt lies below.

San Romualdo founded the hermitage in 1014 and established the monastery between 1018 and 1021, living there for seven years. The abbey later depended on Fonte Avellana and hosted figures such as Saint Peter Damian and Blessed Thomas of Costacciaro. In 2009 it hosted a concert of the 20th Gubbio Summer Festival.

The abbey takes its name from the Sitria stream and belonged to the Benedictine Camaldolese congregation; it still depends on Fonte Avellana, whose monks own it and open the church on request. Access to the site requires advance notice and the location sits within natural countryside that is reached on foot. Visitors should wear appropriate footwear since the path crosses hilly terrain and openings are not always regular.
