Epifanio Crypt, 9th century frescoes in San Vincenzo al Volturno Old Abbey, Castel San Vincenzo, Italy
The Epifanio Crypt contains detailed medieval frescoes depicting saints in Byzantine attire across its walls and barrel-vaulted ceiling, forming a Greek cross shape.
Created during the second quarter of the 9th century, these frescoes were commissioned under Abbot Epiphanius who served the monastery from 824 to 842.
The fresco cycle illustrates essential Christian narratives, including the Annunciation, Nativity, Crucifixion, and Christ as Pantokrator sitting on a blue globe.
The crypt maintains its original structure and artwork, allowing researchers and visitors to examine early medieval religious art and architectural techniques.
Four archangels painted in the apse section of the crypt depict the prophecy of Christ's Second Coming from the Apocalypse of Saint John.
