Monte Meta, Mountain summit in Pizzone, Italy.
Monte Meta is a mountain summit in the Monti della Meta range of the Apennine Mountains in southern Italy, reaching 2,241 meters in elevation. The peak sits within a protected landscape and offers views across surrounding mountain ridges and valleys in the region.
The area became protected in 1925 when 400 hectares near Pizzone were incorporated into the National Park of Abruzzo. This designation shaped how the region developed and has been preserved to the present day.
The Passo dei Monaci at 1,967 meters was historically an important mountain passage for traders, shepherds, and pilgrims traveling between Lazio and Abruzzo. Visitors today can still follow traces of this ancient route and understand how people crossed these heights for centuries.
Access requires prior approval from park administration, and hiking is limited to marked footpaths. The best time to visit is during warmer months when conditions on the trail are most favorable.
The mountain marks the point where three Italian regions meet - Lazio, Abruzzo, and Molise - and stands as the highest point in the Molise region. This special location makes it a remarkable geographical landmark in southern Italy.
