Cascata delle Ninfe, Waterfall in Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, Italy
Cascata delle Ninfe forms a series of water cascades in the Scerta river that flow over limestone formations within the Camosciara reserve of the National Park. The system includes multiple sequential drops that carry water downward in distinct stages.
The waterfall system was shaped millions of years ago as water continuously carved through rock layers, creating the cascades visible today. The area later gained protection status to preserve its geological and ecological values.
The name references mythological nymphs from ancient tradition, believed to dwell in springs and waterfalls. Visitors experience this romantic connection between water and legend, which shapes how locals relate to this natural place.
The site is reached through a marked trail starting from the main parking area on road SS83 west of Villetta Barrea. Hiking through this area requires proper footwear because of wet, slippery rock formations and uneven terrain.
The system is actually known by several names, with each cascade having its own designation, such as the Cascata delle Tre Cannelle. This variety of names reflects how locals and visitors individually view and refer to the different stages of the waterfall.
