Monte Greco, Mountain summit in Abruzzo, Italy
Monte Greco is a mountain summit in the central Apennines reaching approximately 2,285 meters, with gradual slopes on the western side contrasting sharply with steep rocky formations and gullies on the eastern face. The mountain's varied terrain offers different challenges depending on the approach route chosen.
The mountain formed as part of the Apennines geological chain and still displays evidence of ancient glacial periods in its landscape. Its steep eastern flanks result from the intense tectonic activity that shaped this region.
The mountain forms an essential ecological corridor connecting the National Parks of Abruzzo and Majella, supporting diverse wildlife populations throughout the seasons.
Three main routes lead to the summit: Gravare di Sotto, Stazzo Antone Rotondo, and Guado del Vento, each presenting varying difficulty levels. June through September offers the most favorable climbing conditions with minimal snow and ice.
The eastern side of Monte Greco requires technical winter climbing equipment, including ice axes and crampons, due to its steep rocky terrain and icy conditions.
