Santuario di Santa Maria di Monte Tranquillo

The Santuario di Santa Maria di Monte Tranquillo is a shrine located at 1597 meters on Mount Tranquillo, overlooking the Pescasseroli valley below. The chapel sits surrounded by woodland and meadows, commanding views across the mountain landscape.

The original church was built in the early 12th century under orders from Bishop Berardo of Marsi to provide shelter for pilgrims traveling through the mountainous Marsica region. It became an important refuge for travelers crossing difficult terrain.

The sanctuary houses a wooden black Madonna statue that has replaced the stolen original since 1982 and draws many pilgrims during annual July celebrations. For visitors, this figure serves as a focal point for prayer and reflection in the mountain setting.

Visitors can reach the shrine through a marked trail starting at the Vallecupa Equestrian Center, following path C3 through wooded areas and meadows. Sturdy hiking boots and weather preparation are important, as the high altitude makes weather changes unpredictable.

A large rock near the shrine known as the Madonna's Mantle bears an indentation that local tradition attributes to the Virgin Mary resting there during her journey. This rock formation draws visitors curious about local legends and folk beliefs.
